Knock knees & bow legs

Knock knees and bow legs are two types of leg deformities that are observed in children. If left untreated, they can also occur in adults.

Knock knees
When the knees angle inward and touch each other while the feet are apart. Children who experience this often grow out of the condition, however in more extreme cases, surgery may be required to help improve the child's function.

Bow legs
When the knees are significantly further apart when standing with feet together. This results in a wide gap between the legs, in a bowed shape. This is more common in infants and toddlers, and also often resolve on their own as the child grows, however in extreme cases, if left untreated, issues can continue through the child’s development and into adulthood.

Surgery for knock knees or bow legs

An ‘osteotomy’ will be performed. This involves cutting and reshaping the bones in the leg, typically around the knee, to correct the deformity.

After making an incision, Mr Bajaj will then carefully cut the bone and realign it into a more optimal position and may use plates, screws, or pins to hold the bone in place as it heals.

Once the surgery has been completed, to recover, your child will need to stay at the hospital for a few days.

Physiotherapy will be an important part of their treatment following surgery, to ensure they can build up strength and improve function to allow the to perform usual activities such as standing, walking and running.
