Paediatric Surgery

In-tow & out-toe

Toe in (or “pigeon-toed”) is when the feet point inwards when standing, walking or running.

Toe out (or “duck-foot”) is when the feet point outward when standing, walking or running.

These can be due to various factors such as restricted muscles, or bone deformities. Toe in & Toe out usually resolved themselves as the child grows, but it can lead to tripping, falling, or balance problems.

Surgery is not often recommended as these conditions typically resolve naturally as the child grows. However, in some more severe cases, or where there is significant discomfort or function limitation, surgery may be advised.

The specific procedure will depend on the underlying cause of condition, but generally, for these conditions, Mr Bajaj may lengthen or release tight muscles and tighten loose muscles, and cut, reshape & realign bones.

Once the surgery has been completed, to recover, your child will need to stay at the hospital for a few days.

Physiotherapy will be an important part of their treatment following surgery, to ensure they can build up strength and improve function to allow them to perform usual activities such as standing, walking and running.
